Virginia
The Commonwealth of Virginia located on the Atlantic Coast of the Southern part of the United States.. The state is also known as the " Mother of Presidents " and sometimes " Old Dominion ", because it is the place of birth of 8 U.S. presidents. The state is geologically shaped by the Chesapeake Bay and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Virginia Beach is the most heavily populated city, The capital is Richmond, and Fairfax County is the most densely inhabited political subdivision.
The origins of modern Virginia trace back to the Virginia Company establishing of the Virginia Colony in 1607 of London as the first stable New World English colony. Slavery and Colonialism played important roles in Virginia's early politics and economy. Virginia became 1 of the 13 colonies in the American Revolution and consequently joined together with the Confederacy in the American Civil War. Even though by tradition historically and conservative part of the South, modern Virginia is a politically spirited state for both main national parties.
Virginia has an economy with a number of sectors, including federal agencies such as The Pentagon, military bases in Hampton Roads, and agricultural production in Northern Virginia. The Historic Triangle consists of the popular legacy tourism locations of Yorktown, Jamestown and the living museum of Colonial Williamsburg. The expansion of the technology sector has turned computer chips the state's top export, with the industry founded on the strong point of Virginia's public universities and schools. Parts where the state has fell behind include environmental protection and health care.
Native American people were residing in what now is Virginia at the time of the English migration of Virginia. Native American tribes in Virginia consisted of the Saponi, Rappahannock, Powhatan, Nottoway, Nansemond, Monacan, Meherrin, Mattaponi, Pamunkey, Chickahominy, Chesepian, Cherokee and others. The natives are often separated into 3 groups, based to a large degree upon language discrepancies. The biggest group was recognized as the Algonquian led by Chief Powhatan. The native Tidewater inhabitants was in the range of 13,000 to 14,000 in 1607. Powhatan controlled over 150 settlements and over 30 tribes, speaking Virginia Algonquian. 2 other huge groups, the Meherrin and Nottoway, spoke tongues of Iroquois, and others in the piedmont used Sioux tongues.
Queen Elizabeth I of England approved Sir Walter Raleigh place a colony and a charter to explore north of Florida in 1583. Sir Walter Raleigh travelled in the region of the Atlantic coast of North America in 1584. Raleigh named the region "Virginia" after Queen Elizabeth, famous as the "Virgin Queen" because she on no account married. The name sooner or later applied to the entire coast from Maine to South Carolina, and also adding Bermuda. By the proprietary Charter of 1606 the London Virginia Company was included as a joint stock company, which given land rights to this region. The Company funded the first permanent English colonyin the New World. Named for King James, Jamestown was established on May 13, 1607 by Captains John Smith and Christopher Newport. Numerous colonists died during the "starving time" following the loss of the 3rd Supply's flagship, the Sea Venture in 1609.
