The State of Maine is a state in the New England area of the United States of America, adjoining the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast, the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the northwest New Hampshire to the southwest and New Brunswick to the northeast. Maine is the north most portion of New England and is the easternmost state in the United States. It is known for its scenery, its jagged, generally rocky coastline; its rolling, low mountains; and its densely forested interior, plus its seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams.

The original inhabitants of the region that is now Maine are Algonquian speaking people. The first European occupation in Maine was in 1604 by a French party. The earliest English colony in Maine, the short-lived Popham settlement, was founded by the Plymouth Company in 1607. Numerous English settlements were founded along the coastline of Maine in the 1620s, even though the rough climate, scarcities, and Indian attacks wiped out scores of them over the years. As Maine penetrated the 18th century, only a half dozen colonies still survived. British and American forces competed for Maine's territory throughout the War of 1812and the American Revolution. Maine was a part of Massachusetts until 1820 as a consequence of a growing in inhabitants, becoming the 23rd state to join on March 15

Maine's rural outputs consist of cattle, poultry, dairy products, eggs, wild blueberries; the state produces 25% of the entire blueberries in North America, making it the biggest blueberry manufacturer in the world, maple sugar and maple syrup, apples. Aroostook County is acknowledged for its potato crops. Commercial fishing, at one time a mainstay of the state's financial system, maintains a presence, predominantly groundfishing and lobstering. Western Maine springs and aquifers are a main source of bottled water. Maine's industrial outputs consist chiefly of wood and lumber products, paper, electronic equipment, bio-technology, food products, textiles, and leather products. Naval construction and shipbuilding remain a key as well, with Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery and Bath Iron Works in Bath. Naval Air Station Brunswick is moreover in Maine, and provides a large back-up base for the U.S. Navy. However, the BRAC campaign suggested Brunswick's closing, regardless of the recent government-funded attempt to improve its facilities.

Maine ports play a vital role in national shipping. Beginning about 1880, Portland's rail link along with ice-free port made it Canada's primary winter port, until the hostile development of Halifax, Nova Scotia, during the mid-1900s. During 2001, Maine's biggest city of Portland surpassed Boston as New England's busiest harbor, due to its capacity to handle huge tankers. Maine's Portland International Jetport was newly expanded, giving the state with enlarged air traffic from carriers such as JetBlue. Maine has very few big companies that keep up headquarters in the state, and less than before due to mergers and consolidations, mostly in the paper and pulp industry. Some of the superior companies that do keep headquarters in Maine consist of Fairchild Semiconductor in South Portland; Unum, in Portland; TD Banknorth, in Portland; IDEXX Laboratories, in Westbrook; L.L. Bean in Freeport; Cole Haan and Delorme, both positioned in Yarmouth. Maine is also the address of The Jackson Laboratory, the world's principal non-profit mammalian genetic research facility and the world's leading supplier of genetically thoroughbred mice.
